Transfer and Visiting Students

Those who seek advanced standing transfer and/or visiting admission must attend or have previously attended another law school approved by the American Bar Association (ABA), where they are or were pursuing a JD degree. Candidates must be in good standing and eligible to continue legal studies at their previous law school.

Advanced standing candidates are considered separately from the regular admissions process.  Questions about the transfer and visiting application process should be directed to the Law Admissions Office at (503) 768-6613 or lawadmss@lclark.edu. Applicants are encouraged to reach out to the Financial Aid Office at their original institution to discuss any potential financial aid consequences. Questions regarding financial aid at Lewis & Clark Law School can be directed to fao@lclark.edu.

1. Timeline

We begin accepting applications for Spring Transfer and Visiting applicants on September 30th. The application deadline for Spring Transfer candidates is December 15th.

We begin accepting applications for Fall Transfer and Visiting applicants on February 1st. The application deadline for Fall Transfer candidates is July 15th.

Please note as of November 2023, there is no longer an application fee for students applying to Lewis & Clark Law School.

2. Character & Fitness

You will need to answer some questions on the application about character and fitness. Answers to these questions are required, as are explanations for circumstances and outcomes regarding such things as criminal charges, academic sanctions, and military discharges.

In addition to a bar examination, there are character, fitness, and other qualifications for admission to the bar in every U.S. jurisdiction. Applicants are encouraged to determine the requirements for any jurisdiction in which they intend to seek admission by contacting the jurisdiction. Addresses for all relevant agencies are available through the National Conference of Bar Examiners.

TRANSFER STUDENTS:

Complete applications include:

1. Online Application (which includes a brief statement of intent telling us why you wish to transfer).
2. A copy of your Credential Assembly Service (CAS) report from the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC) showing your LSAT scores. This will be ordered directly from LSAC so be sure your account with them is up to date.
3. Official transcripts and a letter of good standing from your current or former law school. *
4. Official transcripts from the undergraduate institution that granted your bachelor’s degree. *

*All transcripts must be uploaded and submitted through LSAC’s Credential Assembly Service (CAS). For applicants seeking to start in the Fall, we must have all your law school grades including your most recent Spring grades before your application will be considered complete. For those seeking to start in the Spring, please submit your most recent law transcripts. Letters of good standing may be sent directly to lawadmss@lclark.edu.

We do not require that you submit a personal essay, letters of recommendation, or list of extracurricular activities.

VISITING STUDENTS:

Complete applications include:

1. Online application (which includes a brief statement of intent telling us why you wish to visit with us).
2. A copy of your Credential Assembly Service (CAS) report from the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC) showing your LSAT scores. This will be ordered directly from LSAC so be sure your account with them is up to date.
3. Official transcripts from your current or former law school. *
4. In addition, you will need to submit a letter* from the Dean of your current law school certifying that you are in good standing and that the credits you earn at Lewis & Clark Law School will be accepted toward your degree.
