The Student Experience

IELP offers Lewis & Clark law students a one-of-a-kind experience; no other law school clinic provides students with hands-on experience exclusively in international environmental law with direct oversight and mentorship from experienced lawyers who specialize in the field. In IELP, Lewis & Clark law students earn class credit and gain real-world experience under the supervision of Professors Chris Wold and Erica Lyman, both practicing international environmental attorneys.

IELP combines in-class instruction with first-hand international environmental law experience. Working with IELP’s professors, students prepare petitions to international institutions, as well as draft treaties and treaty documents, and legal analyses on behalf of non-governmental organizations and governments throughout the world. Students sometimes have the opportunity to support IELP’s work by participating in international meetings, including meetings of the Conference of the Parties of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its Kyoto Protocol. Students have also presented IELP work at meetings of the Commission on Environmental Cooperation, established under NAFTA’s environmental side agreement, and participated in meetings of the International Whaling Commission.
