Ying Chen ’95 has been a patent attorney for twenty-five years. In 2005 she co-founded Chen Yoshimura, LLP., a full-service intellectual property and business law boutique in Los Angeles, which handles matters related to patents, copyright, trademark, and unfair trade practices.

Ying concentrates her practice on preparing and prosecuting patent applications, but also advises clients on issues relating to patent infringement and validity, particularly non-liability opinions, freedom to operate and design-around studies, IP due diligence, and licensing negotiations. Ying also provides support for patent infringement litigation.

Before co-founding Chen Yoshimura, Ying was associated with the global law firm Hogan & Hartson, LLP, first as Associate (2000 – 2002) then Partner (2003 – 2005). She handled cases involving a broad range of technologies, including analog and digital circuits, semiconductor devices and processing, computer hardware and software, liquid crystal displays, medical devices, and others. She began her career as an Associate at Loeb & Loeb LLP (1995 – 2000).

Born and raised in Beijing, she earned a BS from Peking University before undertaking graduate work in Applied Physics at Cornell University, where she earned an MS (1987) and a PhD (1994), prior to attending earning her JD at Lewis & Clark Law School in 1995. Her doctoral research involved the application of various research technologies, including optical and photoelectric devices, to biological samples. In 2013 Ying was honored by Lewis & Clark Law School as its Distinguished Business Law Graduate of the Year.
