James Schultz Joins CALS as Animal Law Teaching Fellow

The Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS) is delighted to welcome James Schultz as an Animal Law Teaching Fellow. In his new role, James will support students across the Animal Law LLM and MSL degree programs, including teaching Introduction to U.S. Legal Studies to international and MSL students. He will also offer animal law students hands-on academic guidance and mentorship and serve as co-advisor to the Lewis & Clark Animal Legal Defense Fund Student Chapter.

“James’s dual background as a practitioner and educator makes him a superb fit for this position,” says Rajesh K. Reddy, Animal Law Program Director and Assistant Professor of Law. “I know our diverse student body will benefit from his expertise throughout the year.”

James brings a unique background in public defense, higher education, and local animal protection to the role. He previously served as a county-level public defender in Indianapolis and has taught extensively across Texas and Ohio, leading courses in government, political science, philosophy, medical ethics, and logic.

His history of animal advocacy spans both policy and campus leadership. While earning his law degree at Indiana University, James led the school’s Animal Legal Defense Fund Student Chapter. At the same time, he served on the Bloomington Animal Control Commission, where he championed local legislation banning the retail sale of dogs and cats. His work has been published in the animal ethics journal Between the Species as well as one of Ohio’s largest newspapers, The Plain Dealer.

Reflecting on his new role, James shares, “As someone interested in academia, law, and animal protection, there are few places I would rather work. When it comes to the study and teaching of animal law, Lewis & Clark is the place to be.”

The Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS) was founded in 2008 with a mission to educate the next generation of animal law advocates and advance animal protection through the law. The advanced degree program is offered in-person and online. CALS is a self-funded Center within the law school operating under the Lewis & Clark College 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, and is able to provide these educational opportunities through donations and grants.
