John Lieberman

United States
In-Person MSL Candidate ’26

While seeking a new canine companion in 2018, Dr. Johnny Lieberman learned about puppy mills- the abuse, the deception, and the shame of a system that permitted their existence. Shortly thereafter, learning about factory farms, animals used in research, and trophy hunting, he developed a new sense of purpose. The concept of a transition from full time work caring for patients to a new career protecting animals began to form.

An Infectious Diseases physician with over 20 years experience practicing medicine, Johnny decided to close his practice in 2021, and set out on a new pathway. While living in Colorado Springs CO, John volunteered at a local animal shelter, and was part of an effort to get a retail pet store puppy sale ban passed. He still works part time as a medical expert witness.

An amateur musician, he enjoys playing piano, and singing, and occasionally gets inspired as a songwriter.

With an MSL in Animal Law, Dr. Lieberman will be using his newly acquired knowledge base and skill set to help protect more animals in a professional capacity, and on a larger scale. He is enthusiastic about making new connections in this space of other animal advocates, sharing his unique perspective, learning from others, and expanding his community.

Dr. Lieberman also recently launched a podcast Puppies Pandemics and Public Health to educate and inform the public about the hidden animal cruelty going on everywhere, how it affects all of us, AND - what we can do about it.

Originally from New York, John currently resides in Portland, OR with his rescue dog Siena, a collie mix. He enjoys time outside in nature, reading and music. He also values his personal connections, especially time with family and friends.
