Corazon Nafula

Kenya
Online MSL Candidate ’27

Corazon’s love for animals stretches back to childhood. She fondly recalls a memory from primary school of keeping baby rats — rescued from the class cupboard — in her desk, and admits she struggled valiantly to keep them alive. That early, imperfect devotion has grown into a lasting commitment to animal welfare: she has volunteered at animal shelters supporting spay and neuter campaigns and has taken part in public participation processes on matters affecting animals.

This deep love for animals is matched by a drive to raise awareness of animal sentience and to alleviate animal suffering. She pursued Veterinary Medicine at the University of Nairobi, Kenya, graduating in 2025 with a foundation in clinical practice and animal welfare science that continues to shape how she approaches advocacy today.

She has worked with Lawyers for Animal Protection Africa, contributing to policies that affect animals from a veterinary perspective. Her journey into animal law was sparked by a lecture on the implementation of animal freedoms and veterinary forensics, a moment that reframed how she saw her own profession. She recalls thinking to herself how impactful a veterinarian’s contribution to the animal law space could be — “it will be incredible.”

Corazon believes animals continue to contribute meaningfully to daily life across African communities — as working animals, farmed animals, companions, and even those returned to the wild — and that solid legal fundamentals must be used to solidify their protection for future generations. She has championed the responsible use of antimicrobials to sustain a One Health ecosystem, and is passionate about using the law to protect animals on land, in the air, and in water, because they matter, and this too is their home. Upon graduating, she looks forward to putting her work out into the world, primarily through research and campaigns centered on animal welfare.
