Gikui W. Gichuhi
Gikui Gichuhi was selected to receive our International Advocates Animal Law LL.M. Scholarship. During the program, she is on leave from her position as Senior Principal Prosecution Counsel with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) Kenya. She was the head of the ODPP Wildlife Crimes Prosecution Unit and the deputy head of the ODPP Land, Environmental, and Related Crimes Division. She joined ODPP in 2012 and was selected in 2013 to deal with the growing menace of wildlife poaching, trafficking and related crime. She played a key role in the development of the first ODPP Wildlife Standard Operating Procedures and Rapid Reference Guidelines booklet which was produced due to an inter agency engagement to provide much needed guidance to prosecutors, investigators and stakeholders in the field on evidential elements and charging decisions. This has led to improved investigations and prosecution leading to increased convictions. This booklet is now in the hands of many law enforcement officers which they use daily. She participated in the charging decisions in numerous wildlife trafficking cases including the infamous ivory trafficker Feisal Mohammed.
“Once completed, I intend to use information gathered from this degree to facilitate the expansion of protection available to our endangered wildlife and strengthen capacity building efforts in law enforcement.”
