Welcome First Year Law Students!

On behalf of the Center for Animal Law (CALS), we’d like to welcome you to Lewis & Clark Law School, home of trailblazing “firsts” in animal law.

For more than a quarter century, Lewis & Clark Law School has been the vanguard of animal law. A decade ago, CALS was launched at the law school and we offer the most extensive animal law curriculum in the world, with over 25 individual courses in animal law, as well as an Animal Law Certificate and the world’s only master of laws (LLM) in Animal Law, which is designed for U.S. and international law school graduates who are focusing their careers on animal law.

In addition, CALS is home to the first legal journal devoted exclusively to animal law (Animal Law Review), the first student animal law organization (L&C SALDF), the world’s longest-running animal law academic conference (Animal Law Conference), and the world’s first and only Dean of Animal Law, Pamela Frasch. Notably, Lewis & Clark Law School also launched a groundbreaking animal law clinic ten years ago, led by Professor Kathy Hessler, at a time when no other animal law clinics existed.

So, as you embark on your first semester of law school, remember YOU can make the world a better place for animals! For more information on getting involved, please visit https://law.lclark.edu/centers/animal_law_studies/about_us/

CALS wishes you all the best as you begin your journey of “firsts”!
