We are delighted to invite applications for our Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS) Academic Fellowships for the 2026–2027 academic year. Created to support exceptional in-person LLM or MSL candidates, the Fellowships reflect our deep commitment to cultivating the next generation of advocates and supporting the cutting-edge scholarship of our faculty.

Each CALS Academic Fellowship provides a full-tuition scholarship (up to 27 credits) along with a generous living stipend of $10,000 per semester (for two semesters), enabling CALS Fellows to focus on their studies while engaging with fellowship work and immersing themselves in the broader animal law community at Lewis & Clark Law School. CALS Fellows undertake a 2-3 credit externship with a CALS faculty member in Fall and Spring. During the externship, which features a class component, Fellows will provide research support and meaningfully contribute to a CALS faculty member’s scholarly agenda, while also gaining the skills and expertise to further their own education and training. For the 2026–2027 academic year, CALS will award up to two fellowships.

Pamela Byce, Associate Dean of the Animal Law Program, says, “By investing directly in outstanding students, we are expanding our international network of advocates, scholars, and practitioners who will help shape the future of the field. We are eager to welcome these CALS Fellows and to support them as they pursue this crucial work.”

Applications for the CALS Academic Fellowship are open until April 1, 2026. To apply, complete all requirements for application to the in-person Animal Law LLM or MSL Program and indicate your fellowship interest in the application form. Apply here for the Animal Law LLM program and here for the Animal Law MSL program.

The Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS) was founded in 2008 with a mission to educate the next generation of animal law advocates and advance animal protection through the law. With vision and bold risk-taking, CALS has since developed into a world-renowned animal law epicenter. In addition to JD study, CALS offers an advanced degree program in-person and online. CALS’ Alumni-in-Action from more than 30 countries are making a difference for animals around the world. CALS is a self-funded Center within the law school operating under the Lewis & Clark College 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, and is able to provide these educational opportunities through donations and grants.
